Part of my fine art collection titled Grounding methods.
This photograph was captured along the seashore in Savannah, Georgia, during the summer of 2024.
The patterns visible in the sand depict a natural coastal phenomenon known as ripple marks formed by tidal and wave action. As water repeatedly moves across wet sand, it organizes sediment into rhythmic ridges shaped by the direction and energy of the tide. Once the water recedes, these formations remain, briefly preserving the motion of the ocean in solid form.
The low angle light emphasizes texture and contrast, transforming the shoreline into an abstract surface that feels sculpted rather than incidental. Each line becomes a quiet record of movement, time, and retreat.
